Liz Thompson is a consultant, lawyer, writer, speaker, motivator and published author. She is a contributor to the Huffington Post. Liz lives life with passion. She divides her time between New York, where she enjoys taking bites out of the “Big Apple” and Barbados where she creates happy times with her family and friends.
On August 28th 2018, Liz presented her credentials to UN Secretary General, António Guterres and was formally recognized as Barbados' Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the United Nations at New York. She still has a love of writing and motivational work, but focuses on her current role for Barbados.
"MAKE YOURSELF HAPPY" is Liz’s first motivational book. She co-authored two previous books, The Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development, Bridge to A Sustainable Future and The Plain Language Guide to Rio+20. She has a number of published papers and articles in several areas of sustainable development and corporate sustainability.
Liz recently served as Interim Executive Director for the establishment of the SUNY-UWI Center for Leadership and Sustainable Development, at New York. She is a former Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, at UN Headquarters, New York. For the UN, she led the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development, developed the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) which attracted membership from over 300 universities in more than 50 countries. She also worked on the SDGs and served as Senior Advisor to the UN Secretary General’s global energy initiative Sustainable Energy for ALL (SE4ALL).
In 2008, before joining the UN, her work in environment, climate change and sustainable development was recognized with the prestigious UN award of “Champion of the Earth.” From 1994 to 2010, she was a Member of Parliament, Minister of Government and then a Senator in Barbados. She also led a Caribbean regional consultancy service which worked in the areas of energy, environment, the MDGs, SIDS and sustainable development.

Improving staff engagement and performance for organizational positioning and delivering on strategic objectives. She is particularly interested in working with leaders, professionals, management teams, women’s organizations and female leaders.
Consultancy services in the areas of energy, environment, sustainable development, policy, formulation, policy implementation, policy analysis and review, the MDGs, the SDGs and SIDS (small states), oil and gas law and policy, local content and unitization, sustainable energy law and policy, renewable energy law and policy, the green economy, corporate sustainability, CSR, navigating the multilateral space, agenda and policy platforms.
Liz holds an LLM from the Robert Gordon University, Scotland, in energy law and policy including oil and gas and renewables, an MBA (with distinction) from the University of Liverpool, UK, The Caribbean Bar Qualification, LEC from the Hugh Wooding Law School, Trinidad and an LLB from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados. Liz is also certified in petroleum negotiations, renewable energy law and policy, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution.
